Wonder

  1. Why did hundreds of identical chains vanish while a handful endured for over a decade?
  2. Why were small proof-of-work chains such easy targets?
  3. Why does age itself build trust in a money?

Explore

  1. Between 2013 and 2015, open-source Bitcoin code allowed anyone to launch a new coin with minimal effort. This resulted in hundreds of clones, most of which were abandoned or manipulated through premines and pump-and-dump schemes. The market was flooded with assets lacking distinct utility, leading to the rapid extinction of nearly all entities launched during this period.
  2. Survivors from 2011–2014 include Litecoin, Dogecoin, XRP, and Monero. Each retained a specific identity: Litecoin for low-cost payments, Dogecoin for culture, XRP for corporate backing, and Monero for privacy. This differentiation allowed them to escape the gravitational pull of Bitcoin, where most generic clones failed because they offered no reason to adopt them over the original.
  3. Continuous development is a critical survival factor. Protocols that maintained active developer communities and upgraded their codebases retained trust. Conversely, projects with concentrated or hidden supply structures, such as undisclosed premines held by founders, often collapsed when those insiders exited. The absence of maintenance signals technical abandonment to users and miners alike.
  4. Security failures disproportionately affected small chains. Thinly traded proof-of-work coins were vulnerable to 51% attacks, where a single entity could double-spend or rewrite transaction history. Regulation also bit: privacy coins lost access to many major exchanges through delistings, though the networks themselves kept running.
  5. Longevity itself builds trust through the Lindy effect: the longer an asset survives, the more probable its continued existence becomes. This simple metric of age serves as a proxy for stability and network effect depth. In money, network effects are powerful; once a community aggregates around a specific coin, migrating to a competitor requires overcoming significant inertia.
  6. Four questions recur when analysts look at a new coin: who holds the supply, who maintains the code, what secures the chain, and why anyone would need it. They do not predict prices, but coins with no good answers have rarely lasted.

Key facts

  • Litecoin, Dogecoin, XRP and Monero are among the best-known survivors of the 2011-2014 altcoin era.
  • Most clones failed due to a lack of differentiation from Bitcoin or abandoned development.
  • Small proof-of-work chains were frequently targeted by 51% attacks due to low security budgets.
  • The Lindy effect suggests that the continued survival of an asset increases the likelihood of its future longevity.
  • Premines and hidden supply concentrations often led to market collapse when insiders sold their holdings.
  • Regulatory pressure resulted in the delisting of several privacy coins from major exchanges.
