Step 4: real bitcoin, not a claim
The UTXO, the custodian, and the network selection

Wonder
- Why does a token on Ethereum representing one bitcoin remain a claim on a custodian rather than native currency?
- How does the withdrawal network setting determine whether funds arrive as native coins or wrapped assets?
- What distinguishes an Unspent Transaction Output controlled by a key from a balance held in escrow?
Explore
- Wrapped bitcoin, such as WBTC or cbBTC, is a token on Ethereum and other chains. It represents a claim on native BTC held by a custodian like BitGo or Coinbase. The token itself does not function within the Bitcoin network; it operates under Ethereum’s rules. Holding this token means holding a promise of redemption from the issuer, subject to their solvency and operational continuity.
- Native bitcoin exists as Unspent Transaction Outputs (UTXOs) on the Bitcoin blockchain. Ownership is proven by possessing the private key that can sign transactions spending these UTXOs. No intermediary holds the coins; the network validates the signature directly against the public key. This structural difference means native BTC requires no counterparty to access, whereas wrapped versions depend entirely on the custodian’s ability to fulfill redemptions.
- An exchange’s withdrawal form asks for a network. ‘Bitcoin’ sends native BTC to a bitcoin address; choices such as ‘Ethereum (ERC-20)’, ‘BNB Smart Chain’ or ‘Solana’ send a wrapped token instead. Sending to an address on the wrong network can lose the funds or leave recovery to the exchange’s goodwill. On-chain, wrapped tokens return to native bitcoin only through the issuer’s redemption process or by selling them for BTC.
- ETF shares and tokenized stocks are also claims, but on funds or issuers rather than custodians. An ETF share is a claim on a fund; a tokenized stock such as an xStock is a certificate issued against shares held by a custodian (lesson 9.3.2). Neither confers direct control over underlying assets. The path to native bitcoin involves selling these claims for fiat or BTC on an exchange, then withdrawing the resulting native coins to a self-custody address.
- Verification of native holdings requires checking the blockchain directly. Open a block explorer and search for the receiving address. Confirm that UTXOs exist at that address and that their total value matches expectations. If the balance appears only in an Ethereum wallet as WBTC, it is not yet native bitcoin. The transition from claim to coin occurs only when the custodian releases BTC to a Bitcoin address.
- The trade-off between wrapped assets and native coins involves utility versus sovereignty. Wrapped tokens enable composability within DeFi protocols on other chains but introduce counterparty risk. Native coins offer direct control and censorship resistance but lack interoperability without bridging. Many users maintain both: wrapped assets for active trading strategies, and native BTC for long-term storage where the custodian’s failure would otherwise be their own.
Key facts
- WBTC and cbBTC are tokens on other chains backed by native BTC held by a custodian.
- Native bitcoin consists of UTXOs controlled by private keys, requiring no intermediary for access.
- Selecting the wrong withdrawal network can result in funds being sent to incompatible addresses.
- ETF shares are claims on a fund’s portfolio, not direct ownership of underlying assets.
- Verification of native BTC requires checking UTXOs at an address via a block explorer.
- Wrapped tokens introduce counterparty risk; native coins offer direct control without custodial dependency.

9CollectList 9 distinct forms of digital asset ownership, ranging from native coins to wrapped tokens and fund shares.
6ClusterGroup the 9 into 6 categories based on their dependency: no counterparty, single custodian, multiple custodians, bridge operators, fund managers, or exchange escrow.
3DistillReduce the 6 groups to 3 core reasons why asset ownership can be lost without theft: custodial failure, technical incompatibility, or legal claims.
