Wonder

  1. Why does the initial allocation of a token determine its future price dynamics?
  2. What is the economic difference between mining from day one and buying at a fixed rate in a crowdsale?
  3. How do vesting schedules transform a private sale into a continuous supply shock?

Explore

  1. Bitcoin launched with no premine. From 3 January 2009, anyone could run the software and mine blocks; coins attributed to Satoshi’s early mining have never moved. Ethereum’s July–September 2014 crowdsale sold 60 million ETH for roughly 31,500 BTC, while an additional 12 million tokens were allocated to contributors, the Foundation, and developers. This split created a distinct economic layer: public buyers paid market rates, while insiders received tokens at zero or fixed cost.
  2. XRP represents the opposite extreme. All 100 billion units existed at the ledger’s June 2012 launch. Founders allocated 80 billion to OpenCoin (later Ripple) and retained 20 billion personally. Unlike Bitcoin’s gradual issuance, XRP’s supply was fully formed before any trading began. This structure concentrates control in a single entity that manages escrow releases to influence market liquidity and predictability, fundamentally altering the relationship between issuer and holders.
  3. Venture-backed chains typically sell tokens privately at low valuations with multi-year vesting schedules. These allocations grant investors significant upside but create future selling pressure as locks expire. The trade-off is clear: early capital funds development, while insiders gain substantial equity-like exposure to the token’s success. This mechanism distinguishes venture-driven launches from fair-launch models where all participants access tokens simultaneously under identical conditions.
  4. The critical question for any token is insider allocation: how much did insiders receive, at what price, and when can they sell? A high float with low fully diluted valuation suggests most supply is already circulating. Conversely, a low float with high FDV indicates massive future unlocks that will dilute existing holders unless offset by new demand. This metric reveals the hidden supply overhang embedded in a token’s design.
  5. Ethereum’s allocation created a permanent structural advantage for early participants who acquired ETH at approximately $0.31 per unit during the crowdsale, compared to later market prices. The 12 million ETH outside the sale, about 17% of the launch supply, went to early contributors and the Foundation without payment. That allocation funded development and shaped who held influence over Ethereum from the start.
  6. A token’s vesting schedule is usually public. Open a block explorer or tokenomics tracker to identify upcoming unlock dates for large holder cohorts. Compare the circulating supply against maximum supply to calculate the float ratio. A token with 10% circulation and $1 billion FDV faces $900 million in future unlocks, requiring equivalent new demand to maintain price stability.

Key facts

  • Bitcoin had no premine; Satoshi’s early coins remain unmoved since January 2009.
  • Ethereum’s 2014 crowdsale sold 60 million ETH for ~31,500 BTC, with 12 million more allocated to insiders and developers.
  • XRP launched in June 2012 with all 100 billion units created; founders kept 80 billion for the company and 20 billion personally.
  • Venture-backed tokens typically use private sales with multi-year vesting schedules, creating future selling pressure as locks expire.
  • Fully diluted valuation (FDV) equals price times maximum supply, revealing the total economic value if all locked tokens were circulating.
  • A low float relative to FDV indicates significant future token unlocks that will dilute existing holders unless absorbed by new demand.

9CollectList 9 cryptocurrencies launched between 2009 and 2024. For each, record the allocation method (fair launch, premine, ICO, private sale), the insider share at launch, and the vesting terms.
6ClusterGroup the 9 into 6: fair launch, full premine, public crowdsale, private venture sale, airdrop-led, or mixed.
3DistillReduce the 6 groups to 3 levels of insider advantage, and name the factor that separates them.
