Wonder

  1. What happens to the dollar value of a coin when its quote asset collapses?
  2. Why does holding a token paired with another volatile asset introduce two distinct risks instead of one?
  3. How many trades are required to convert a position held in an exotic quote asset into stable currency?

Part IWhy the pairing asset matters

  1. Automated market makers (AMMs) operate by pairing a base token with a specific quote asset within a liquidity pool. The ratio between these two assets defines the price at which trades execute. When a user buys the base token, they supply the quote asset to the pool and receive the base token in return. Conversely, selling the base token returns the quote asset to the seller. This mechanism makes the quote asset the fundamental unit of account for that specific market.
  2. Most memecoins on Solana pair with SOL or USDC, but some launchpads, StonkFun among them, let creators select almost any token as the quote. This includes wrapped bitcoin tokens, other memecoins, or tokenized equities. Choosing an exotic quote asset fundamentally alters the economic structure of the pool. The price of the base token becomes a composite measure: it reflects both its own demand and the market performance of the quote asset.
  3. A coin paired with SOL rises and falls with SOL as well as with its own specific demand. If SOL appreciates, the dollar-denominated value of the memecoin increases even if no new buyers enter the pool. Conversely, a coin paired with a stablecoin like USDC moves solely in response to its own supply and demand dynamics. The choice of quote asset thus determines whether the token carries exposure to broader crypto market volatility or is isolated from it.
  4. Exotic quotes introduce a second layer of liquidity risk. If the quote asset’s own market is thin, exiting a position becomes more complex. A trader holding a memecoin paired with an illiquid token must first sell the memecoin for that token, and then execute a separate trade to convert the token into dollars or stablecoins. This two-step exit process increases slippage and exposes the trader to price movements in both assets during the transaction.
  5. Consider a worked example: a coin’s price doubles in quote terms while the quote asset falls 30% in dollar value. The dollar value ends at 2 × 0.7 = 1.4 times where it started: a 40% gain, not 100%. This arithmetic demonstrates how the quote asset’s performance directly modifies the base token’s returns. Traders must account for both variables when evaluating potential gains or losses.
  6. To verify this mechanism, open a block explorer and locate an AMM pool where the quote asset is not SOL or USDC. Observe the transaction history: each sale of the base token results in the seller receiving the specific quote asset defined by the pool configuration. Price impact inside the pool depends on its two reserves; converting the proceeds to dollars then depends on the quote asset’s own market.
  7. Part IILaunchpad ecosystems: a case study

  8. StonkFun is a Solana launchpad whose coins can be paired with almost any quote asset: SOL, stablecoins, major wrapped crypto, other memecoins and tokenized stocks such as xStocks. Its platform token, $STONK, went live on 23 July 2026 in a pool paired with SPYx, a tokenized S&P 500 tracker, and the launchpad opened on 3 August. The team is pseudonymous. Every coin it launches is a Token-2022 mint with a supply of one billion.
  9. The idea joins two earlier threads. Strategy, the company Michael Saylor turned into a bitcoin treasury (lesson 6.3.5), made its stock, MSTR, a popular way to hold leveraged bitcoin exposure. In June 2025 Backed Finance launched xStocks, tokens backed one-for-one by shares held in custody; MSTRx tracks Strategy’s stock. By October 2026, tokenized versions of Strategy’s common and preferred shares were worth about $491 million, according to DefiLlama data cited by the company. Pairing a memecoin with such a token lets a community trade a meme priced in the stock it celebrates.
  10. At first each launch opened a Raydium concentrated-liquidity pool directly, with authorities revoked. Around 6-7 September 2026 Raydium’s LaunchLab added support for any token pair, and StonkFun moved onto it: about 79% of supply now sells along a bonding curve, with a 1% fee per trade, before graduating to a Raydium pool. The cost of deploying a coin fell from about 0.29 SOL to about 0.03. On 6 September StonkFun’s daily revenue, about $1.5 million, briefly exceeded pump.fun’s; days later pump.fun added custom pairs of its own.
  11. Creators choose a standard launch, with no transfer fee, or a ‘reward launch’ with a Token-2022 transfer fee of 1% or 3%, charged on every transfer wherever it happens. On older direct-pool coins the rate is locked; on LaunchLab coins the platform wallet can still change it, up to 100%. That wallet collects the fee, sells it into the coin’s pool and pays holders pro rata in the quote asset. Holders trust the operator, and its selling shows on every chart.
  12. The model has been examined in public. In September 2026 the analytics firm Bitquery reported that over 30 days the fee wallet had sold about $56.3 million of coins and paid holders about $56.2 million, and that at least $1.41 million had gone to platform-linked wallets outside the public reward ledger. $STONK launched with a fixed supply of one billion (about 18% since burned), no presale and no disclosed team allocation; the platform says about 60% of revenue buys and burns it, a policy rather than an on-chain rule.
  13. To inspect a coin, open its mint on a Solana explorer and check the Token-2022 transfer-fee extension (the rate) and the mint authority; then follow the system wallet’s transfers, what it sells and what it pays out, and compare them with the platform’s published reward ledger. The same questions apply to any reward launchpad. This lesson describes the platform; it does not recommend it.

Key facts

  • Every AMM pool pairs a base token with a specific quote asset, defining the unit of account for the market.
  • A coin paired with SOL inherits volatility from both its own demand and SOL’s price movements.
  • A coin paired with a stablecoin like USDC moves only in response to its own supply and demand dynamics.
  • Exotic quote assets introduce a second liquidity risk, requiring two trades to exit into dollars if the quote market is thin.
  • The dollar-denominated return of a token equals its price change in quote terms multiplied by the quote asset’s dollar performance.
  • Some launchpads allow creators to select any token as the quote asset, including wrapped crypto or tokenized equities.
  • $STONK went live on 23 July 2026; the StonkFun launchpad opened on 3 August 2026.
  • StonkFun coins are Token-2022 mints with a supply of one billion.
  • Reward launches carry a 1% or 3% transfer fee, paid to holders in the quote asset by a platform wallet.
  • In September 2026 StonkFun moved launches onto Raydium LaunchLab’s bonding curve.
  • xStocks, launched by Backed Finance in June 2025, include MSTRx, which tracks Strategy’s shares.
  • A September 2026 Bitquery investigation traced the fee wallet’s sales and payouts and found funds outside the public reward ledger.

Exercise nine, six, three, one

9CollectIdentify 9 different AMM pools on Solana. For each, note the base token and its quote asset.
6ClusterGroup these 9 pools into 6 by how volatile and how liquid their quote assets are.
3DistillReduce these 6 groups to 3 core risks associated with choosing a non-stablecoin quote asset for a liquidity pool.
1CrystallizeWrite one sentence explaining how the choice of quote asset determines both the unit of account and the exit path for a token holder.
